The Nomination list of Nigeria's most prestigious award show is out, The Headies and this will mark the 12th edition and so here is a review of the award show over the years and a glimpse of the Next Rated Artiste Category.
History
The Headies (formerly known as the Hip Hop World Awards) are an accolade established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievement in the Nigerian music industry. The annual ceremony features performances by established and promising artists. It is broadcast live on HipTV to television viewers across Nigeria. The 2006 and 2007 editions of The Headies were held at the Muson Center in Onikan, Lagos State and it was awarded on 10th March 2006. From 2010 through 2012, The Headies were held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island , Lagos. Several media personalities in Nigeria have hosted the annual ceremony, including Darey Art Alade , D'banj , Dakore Egbuson , Banky W. , Rita Dominic , M.I , Tiwa Savage, Dr SID, Kaffy, Bovi and Falz.
History of the Plaque
The image of The Headies was created by Ayo Animashaun , the founder of the awards, and drawn by Matthias Aragbada. The first Headie plaque was done by Jide Adewoye. It represents "the image and the shout of a young, vibrant man whose talent can challenge that of Nas , Mode 9, Kanye West and Jay Z combined but who has almost lost confidence in his abilities in the face of daunting odds presented by the Nigerian environment." In 2008, the plaque was redone in the United Kingdom. It was plated with 21 carat gold. The new plaque is a mixture of resin , copper, steel, marble and gold.
Now what everyone seems to talking about is the Next Rated Artiste Award, well this is not surprising as some of the great acts in Nigerian Music Industry have won that award the likes of Wande Coal, WizKid, Davido, Reekado Banks and a host of others have shared in that glory. The Next Rated Artiste is not just an award it is a projection of an artiste's worth and how relevant or successful he or she will be in the nearest future.
No wonder there was a serious controversy and back lash concerning the 2015 Edition which Reekado Banks won, some argue that Lil Kesh deserved the award considering the fact that he released more hits and maintained great relevance throughout the country within the required timeline though most people argue that his choice of music lacks content or direction and that's why Reekado Banks was given the award and besides a vast majority of people believed that people voted for Reekado Banks but let's not draw conclusion over who deserved the award because there were other eligible acts in that category namely Kiss Daniel, Korede Bello and Cynthia Morgan, who also stood a chance to win.
Now what is history of the Next Rated and how it began, well the Award for Next Rated is an award presented at The Headies, a ceremony that was established in 2006 and originally called the Hip Hop World Awards. It was first presented at the 3rd Annual The Headies Awards in 2008. In addition to receiving an award, recipients of the Next Rated Honor are given a vehicle at a later date.
Now the Headies Award is here again this year and below are the nominees
